Conquering Lake Khuvsgul, known as the “Blue Pearl,” is located in Khuvsgul Province in northern Mongolia. Khuvsgul is the second-largest freshwater lake in Central Asia and contains about 2% of the world’s freshwater. It is the largest and deepest lake in Mongolia and one of the 17 ancient lakes of the world. Its total length is approximately 1,000 km, and it eventually drains into Lake Baikal, which lies only 200 km away in a straight line. The water is incredibly clear, allowing you to see every detail of the fish swimming a dozen meters or more below the surface. The area around Lake Khuvsgul is rich in phosphorus, and the lake is a major tourist destination in Mongolia. Along the way, you will enjoy a stunning variety of green landscapes.
Upon arrival at Chinggis Khan International Airport in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, your guide-interpreter and driver will meet you. Transfer to your hotel and city tour (half-day or full-day excursion depending on your arrival time). The capital has much to offer. During the tour, you will visit Gandan Monastery, a historic and spiritual Buddhist temple in the city.
After breakfast, drive to Amarbayasgalant Monastery, one of the largest and most beautiful Buddhist monasteries in Mongolia, built in the 18th century and dedicated to the spiritual leader Zanabazar. Explore the monastery and its peaceful surroundings.
After breakfast, we'll drive to Uran Togoo, an extinct volcano in the Bulgan province. Along the way, you'll have idyllic views of the steppes with endless green pastures and a blue sky in the background.
In the morning, we'll travel north to Khuvsgul province. Remember to keep your cameras handy, as there will be plenty of photo opportunities. In the late afternoon, we'll reach the beautiful Khuvsgul Lake, located in the village of Khatgal. We'll settle into our yurt camp near the river.
After breaking camp once again, explore the breathtaking shores of Mongolia's largest and most beautiful freshwater lake by boat, or enjoy a horseback ride on the beaches of Khovsgol, winding through pine and larch forests amidst herds of yaks and sheep. Dinner and overnight stay in a camp.
Today, you will be traveling to the village of Ikh Uul in the Khuvsgul province. Once you arrive in Ikh Uul, we will help the families dismantle their yurts (including ours!) and settle in with a nomadic family, so that the following day you can experience a complete nomadic lifestyle.
Rising quite early, today you'll live at the same pace as the nomads and participate in camp life. You'll accompany the herd to pasture, milk the cattle, fetch water, and make dairy products such as "aaruul" (dried yogurt), orom (fresh cream), and Mongolian cheeses. After lunch, you'll set off on a horseback or walking trek to visit a neighboring nomadic family.
The road leads to Lake Ugii, located at an altitude of 1,337 meters, east of Arkhangai. The lake is 7.9 km long and 5.3 km wide, with a total surface area of 25 km². It is a lake teeming with fish (pike, perch, carp, burbot, stone loach, etc.) and an important stopover for migratory birds, particularly those of the Anatidae family. It is considered a place of worship by the local inhabitants.
After breakfast, drive to Kharkhorin, once the capital of the Great Mongol Empire in the 13th century. Visit Erdene-Zuu Monastery, the first and largest monastery in Mongolia, built on the ruins of the ancient capital. After years of being closed, the monastery has been restored to active worship.
Enjoy a hearty Mongolian breakfast before departing for Ulaanbaatar ( 2-hour drive). After some free time to do your last-minute shopping and take a few more photos of urban Mongolia, you'll attend the renowned Tumen Ekh Traditional Arts Show at 6:00 PM.
This day we will transfer to the airport for departure.
